Black Uakari

Cacajao melanocephalus


Habitat
Restricted to permanently or seasonally flooded forest, especially near blackwater streams, where they use the canopy layer. They have a patchy distribution in mature lowland rainforest.

Geographical spread
Upper Amazon Basin north of the river in SE Colombia, S Venezuela and the adjacent Brazil. Range poorly understood.

Listed as endangered by the USDI and as vulnerable by the IUCN and on appendix 1 of the CITES.

Size
Head and body length 300-500mm, tail length 125-210mm.

Weight
2.4-4 kg; males slightly larger than females.

Average life expectancy
Probably similar to White uakaris.

Normal diet
Feeds on fruits and probably nuts.

Normal lifestyle
Lives in groups of 15-30 or more. Probably similar to White uakaris.

Previous geographical spread
Not known, possibly none.

Reasons for decline
Although Black uakaris are still abundant in parts of Brazil (generally the remote parts of its range), they are increasingly vulnerable to hunting as the human population builds up in the area. Hunted for food in Colombia.

Current threats
Increased human population in its range.

Conservation projects
Not known.
