Distribution
Main population is restricted to Fiordland, on South Island, New Zealand. Smaller populations occur on four offshore islands.

Population
In addition to the Fiordland populations of 150+ (1994), there are about 40 other individuals distributed between the four islands.
Threats
Competition from deer for food and predation by introduced mammals.
Conservation
Deer management has improved the supply of grassland vegetation for food. Predator trapping of stoats. Captive breeding and releases are planned for more island reserves, and this may be easier if foster parents can be found.

Special features
This flightless bird was thought extinct in the 1930's but was 'rediscovered' in 1948. It is monogamous, breeding in family groups.
